Season’s Greetings

I found this nice Shirley Temple graffiti on a small door at the entrance of a former squat building at the corner of Ciutat de Granada and Pallars streets in Barcelona 22@ Poble Nou district. I walked many times in front of the building when photographing the 22@ area and I always noticed this happy sight and pleasant smile, quite an unexpected contrast in an old quarter all shaken by heavy works and immersed on a powerful transformation process.

Two months before photographing the graffiti, the squat -a building that had previously been a car repair workshop, and even before a small factory- was razed and the site cleared for new construction. The graffiti was lost and only one single beautiful element from the old XIXth century factory was preserved, a long and tall chimney.

That’s why I want to share with you this photograph and wish you all the best for the new year to come. Season’s greetings and happy new year 2011.

22@ Barcelona

22@ Barcelona project is converting formerly industrial Poble Nou area into an innovative district now housing intensive knowledge based activities: it is the city’s most important project of the last years in terms or urban transformation and infrastructure creation and large amounts of both public and private resources are being invested.

Many important architectural firms are developing projects that are changing the face and the mood of the city and astonishingly transforming Barcelona urban landscape. These firms’ proposals are sowing the city with new shapes, colors and textures that I had not seen through my camera’s viewfinder for years.

I have been photographing many of 22@ projects since year 2007, specially Blanch + Conca Arquitectura works (Melon District Hotel, Diagonal 199, Pere Quart Building, ILlacuna Building …), and projects by David Chipperfield, Jean Nouvel, Dominique Perrault, b720, Cloud 9 and BAAS Architects.

There are still many interesting works in progress that I will add to my gallery as soon as I photograph them. Patience is required when you are in architectural photography …

Mediatic Building

I decided to portray Enric Ruiz Geli & Cloud 9 Architects Barcelona MediaTIC Building as the light and elastic volume I found when I first planned my photographs on location.

In order to capture the precise image I had in mind, I looked for a point of view where the metallic structure that frames the building and supports its suspended galleries was shown as both as resolute and delicate and on a proportion not so heavy to fade the complexity and subtle movement on the main facade elements.

The sunset light coming from nowhere draws transparency and gloss on the building front, simplifies the shapes on the image and gives it a distinctive cold cast in blues and greens.

September is here, autumn is getting closer and a new season starts today. Seasons may sometimes look alike, but I feel this one is going to be very different with amazing projects, assignments and ideas to explore. Just to begin this brand new season, I have uploaded some recent photographs for you to my gallery that you don’t have already seen …

I have been working many times in 22@ Barcelona development area, a formerly industrial district now housing university colleges, communication companies, firm headquarters, museums and hotels in newly designed spaces by well known architectural firms. Jean Nouvel’s Agbar tower was the first of all these important architectural projects and it was designed to be a new Barcelona city landmark and a symbol of the district renovation. … Read more …

34 Carme Street, Barcelona

Architect and interior designer Agustí Costa completed last February 2010 his 34 Carme Street project, an apartment and studio for a visual artist in Barcelona Raval area.

Carme Street project consists on a renovation of a 130 square meters apartment on the last floor of a 1870 six story modernist building: the owner project statement prioritized workshop areas that she preferred to be located where  sunlight was more prominent, while accommodation areas were intended to be at the center of the flat where natural lighting was less noticeable. … Read more …

The subtle light coming through the window on the left of the small kitchen designed by architect Josep Llobet on his Barcelona Viladomat street project is the main light of this photograph and it is almost actually the only light that we used to capture the precise and delicate mood we had in mind for this apartment Josep Llobet is submitting to 2010 FAD Interior Design Awards. … Read more …
